Abstract: The Dahe pigs were one of the important groups of the Wujin pigs, as a typical representative of meat-fat type pig breeds, they were a local breed in Southwest China, and had been included in the national genetic resources protection list and had become a national protected pig breed. The Dahe pig was famous for its large body size, strong resistance, tolerance to rough feeding, high intramuscular fat content, and tender, delicious meat quality. It was one of the three famous national hams, the "Yun ham" and the preferred raw material of "Yun ham" pig breed. Extensive and systematic research had been conducted around the conservation and breeding, crossbreeding utilization, meat quality characteristics, genetic diversity, and molecular breeding of the Dahe pig. These studies were of great significance and value for the protection and development of the Dahe pig's germplasm resources. This article aimed to summarize the achievements of germplasm resources of past 50 years, in the hope of providing a reference for the in-depth conservation of breeding and development of the Dahe pig, and promoting the high-quality and sustainable development of the Dahe pig industry.
Key words: Dahe pig, genetic breeding, germplasm resource, genetic diversity, pork quality, research progress
